A case study – Creative Space: Residency for Mid-Career Choreographers project

Dance practitioners often hit a plateau when they are in mid-career. These can be traced to multiple reasons, one of the most substantial being the gradual dry up of financial support as they progress beyond the eligibility to be supported as young or emerging artists. In addition, the current practice in Hong Kong for commissioning new works often involves paying artists a lump sum for one project. One major shortcoming of this practice is that artists are not relieved from other engagements while creating a work. These two factors create a vicious cycle that hinders the growth of a representative body of work from mid-career choreographers. To address this problem, the Hong Kong Dance Alliance sought funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council of the HKSAR government (HKADC) to support three mid-career artists with a 5-month residency to create new works to be presented in a Hong Kong showcase production, the World Dance Alliance Global Summit in July 2014 and other Asia Pacific festivals. This paper will share the implementation of this pilot project and the evaluation of the outcome that map with the holistic dance development in Hong Kong for the next five to ten years.
