Urban Cultural Dance

“Urban Cultural Dance” represents Jazmyne’s vision to combine her love of sharing cultural dance traditions with her curiosity in other styles, such as modern dance, jazz funk and hip-hop. The dance practices used in this class draw from Hawaiian hula dance – hula kahiko (traditional) and hula ʻauana (modern style) – together with hip-hop and jazz funk. Students will learn the lineage of influences starting with music and basic movement vocabulary from traditional hula kahiko before exploring the quality of hula ʻauana dance, a style shaped by foreign influences. With some traditional basis and understanding of culture, students will proceed by adapting the movement to cross-cultural music rhythms and choreography sequences as a hybrid form influenced from very different to the traditional – moving toward a contemporized version of the dance that is shaped by other cultural contacts, music genres and influences from today. Students will acquaint themselves with the diverse elements that make up Hawaiian culture in the traditional style of dancing; and with this knowledge bring hula’s strength and grace into play with other movement styles from other regions.

This masterclass is suitable for all with some dance training.
