Australian dance artists and the French connection

Since 2001, Australian dance artists have taken part in the Cité Residency, a grant residency founded by the Australia Council for the Arts that provides artists the chance to undertake a period of professional development. These artists travel abroad to explore their practice in an international context, returning to Australia to contribute to the richness of the Australian cultural landscape. The purpose of this Performative Presentation is to showcase a unique cross section of these contemporary Australian dance practitioners and their interaction with the French dance sector. Paris, with its long-standing reputation as a cultural capital, acts as a beacon for Australian artists to explore and refine their craft. Artists who have utilised the Cité Residency to visit Paris include: Vicki Van Hout (NSW), 2013; Nick Power (NSW), 2012; Clare Dyson (QLD), 2008; Melissa Gray (VIC), 2005; and Kate Denborough, 2001. These artists and their work are the basis for this presentation and additional discussion of contemporary trends in Australian dance, including the exploration of the relationship between artist and audience, increasingly sophisticated explorations of traditional and contemporary indigenous and intercultural practice, and the continued blurring of genre and creation of interdisciplinary works.

Depuis 2001, des artistes de danse australiens ont pris part à la Cité Residency, une grande résidence fondée par l’Australia Council of the Arts qui donne aux artistes la chance de s’engager dans une période de développement professionnel. Ces artistes voyagent à l’étranger afin de sonder leurs pratiques dans un contexte international avant de retourner en Australie pour contribuer à la richesse du paysage culturel australien. L’objet de cette présentation performative est de mettre en valeur un échantillon exceptionnel de ces praticiens de la danse contemporaine australienne et leurs liens avec le secteur de la danse en France. Paris, avec sa réputation ancienne de capitale culturelle, représente un phare pour les artistes australiens désireux d’approfondir et affiner leur art. Parmi les artistes qui ont utilisé la Cité Residency pour séjourner à Paris, on trouve : Vicki Van Hout (Nouvelle-Galles du Sud) en 2013; Nick Power (Nouvelle-Galles du Sud) en 2012; Clare Dyson (Queensland) en 2008; Melissa Gray (Victoria) en 2005; et Kate Denborough en 2001. Ces artistes et leurs travaux sont la base de cette présentation et des discussions qui s’ensuivront sur les tendances contemporaines de la danse en Australie, notamment l’exploration des relations entre artistes et public; les études de plus en plus subtiles sur les pratiques indigènes et interculturelles, traditionnelles et contemporaines; et le flou perpétuel du genre et de la création d’œuvres interdisciplinaires.
