Amrita Performing Arts: an evolution in Cambodian dance

Since its inception in July 2003, Amrita Performing Arts has become a major catalyst for helping young Cambodian artists find their voice and move their creative drive forward in a proactive, nurturing and culturally sensitive environment. Through intensive dialogue and workshopping, collaborative works with international choreographers from around the world have been created. As offspring of a generation of masters that painstakingly revived a nearly annihilated performing arts heritage, this new generation of Cambodian choreographers and dancers are today creating cutting edge works that reflect their evolving social and political landscape while remaining faithful to their ancient heritage. These works are being embraced by a new Cambodian audience and making their way onto stages around the world. Amrita has recently established A Contemporary Dance Platform, which is enabling this new generation of Cambodian emerging choreographers to present new works and engage in dialogue about the form and process. As Amrita moves through this evolution, its rationale of promoting and fostering contemporary creativity has become more interesting than ever. International choreographers are now breaking their own standard procedures of simply ‘choreographing a new work’ and are invited to join this dialogue.

Depuis sa création en juillet 2003, l’Amrita Performing Arts est devenu un catalyseur essentiel pour aider les jeunes artistes cambodgiens à trouver leur voie et à déplacer leur énergie créative dans un environnement proactif, enrichissant et culturellement sensible. À partir de discussions nombreuses et d’un travail en ateliers, des œuvres ont été créées en collaboration avec des chorégraphes venant d’un peu partout dans le monde. Résultat d’une génération de maîtres qui ont méticuleusement refait vivre un héritage dans le domaine presque anéanti des arts du spectacle, cette nouvelle génération de chorégraphes et danseurs cambodgiens crée des œuvres tranchantes qui reflètent l’évolution de l’environnement social et politique tout en restant fidèles à leur ascendance. Ces œuvres ont été adoptées par un public cambodgien nouveau et ont fait leur chemin sur la scène internationale. Amrita a récemment mis en place A Contemporary Dance Platform qui permet à cette nouvelle génération de chorégraphes cambodgiens émergents de présenter des œuvres nouvelles et d’engager un dialogue sur la forme et le processus. Avec cette évolution d’Amrita, la logique de production de cette dernière et l’accueil qu’elle offre à la créativité contemporaine sont devenus plus intéressants que jamais. Les chorégraphes internationaux sont désormais en train de rompre avec leurs propres procédures standard consistant à simplement « chorégraphier une nouvelle œuvre » et sont invités à nous rejoindre dans ce dialogue.
